Feb 15-Tuesday Day 9
Chem 112-We will spend half of the class doing a prelab for the first set of labs. Today we will go over isotopes(section 4.3) and check over the answers to the electron configuration work that you did early last week. You will be checking over answers to theory questions from the textbook. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about any of the work you have done so far. Our test is Friday. If time permits you will sign your contracts for going to the lab. Please do not forget the parental permission form. Lab 2/6 Elements versus Compounds-This experiment involves using heat to break down compounds. You will find that it has a flaw in terms of trying to break down all compounds. You will become an expert at using the centigram balance.
Lab 3/7 Candle Lab-This lab involves making observations and trying different techniques for dealing with candle wax combustion.
Lab 4/8 Separation of Matter-This experiment involves using the varation methods for separating matter to separate the components in an unknown mixture. Acuracy will be very important in this experiement.
Chem 122-More work with calorimeter calculations(bomb calorimeter) and reaction calculations where a reaction is providing energy for heating water in a hot water tank..- we finished group work so I will do the following tomorrow.--> I also went over an example from the handout...#10a (ans. -3.35 GJ) and gave you time to do 11 b. in class. Chem 122- Today I went over Ksp. Do p 562 #17 and 18. You received a handout of questions that need to be done during the break.
Please do #1-7 from the top of the handout and 1,2,3 from the bottom of the handout on Ksp. If you are away then please look this up in your text under section 18.3. We also watched the Haber Process Video.

It should consist of a page folded in four with the properties like conductivity, tests(litmus, phenophthalein, pH) and how you would recognize the formjula AND include pictures and examples(with formulas) for at least three compounds from each category.

You will be doing some theory work from 19.1 for homework on your own for next tuesday. Chem 112 Assignment on Properties due today. We went over some formulas and names to watch out for. There are answers for the most difficult questions from the worksheets on chart paper on the wall in my room if you need to double check your work. We also did a quiz on molecular study formulas and the polyatomic ions/names out of 20 marks.

Chem 122-We will work with indicators today. I will also go over 1 to 4 from the handout from last thursday. We also went over the Ka, Kb questions. I did a quick demo to illustrate how an indicator works. You did 1 to 4 from the white board in class. You will start some group work with amphiprotic and acid/base table. This will be completed tomorrow.

Chem 112-Today we looked at the Quantum mechanical model of the atom. We looked at indicating the energy level, orbital and number of electrons in a partcular orbital. I introduced the diagonal rule to students. This section can be found in the textbook from page 164-166. Write the electron configuration for the following atoms. You were assigned As,Pb, U for homework and p 111 #15.16, p 112 #17, 18 and p 113 #19, 20

Chem 112-We will spend half of the class doing a prelab for the first set of labs. Today we will go over isotopes(section 4.3) and check over the answers to the electron configuration work that you did early last week. You will be checking over answers to theory questions from the textbook. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about any of the work you have done so far. Our test is Friday. Lab 2/6 Elements versus Compounds-This experiment involves using heat to break down compounds. You will find that it has a flaw in terms of trying to break down all compounds. You will become an expert at using the centigram balance.
Lab 3/7 Candle Lab-This lab involves making observations and trying different techniques for dealing with candle wax combustion.
Lab 4/8 Separation of Matter-This experiment involves using the varation methods for separating matter to separate the components in an unknown mixture. Acuracy will be very important in this experiement.

Chem 112- Today we did group review for the midterm. We went over the scientists from the wiki and reviewed percent composition and metric conversion with one of the group work stations.Chem 122-Lab Day 4 Do not forget the work from before the labs:The top right worksheet from the pink handout was assigned to be done in your notebook on a full sheet of loosleaf. Chem 122- Today we will go over another example with the five step process. I will go over the homework question with you. You will be given some in class time to work on some practise questions. These should be completed as homework. I will post the answers to the sheet #3 on the smart board. You will also receive an assignment that is due next friday on Hess's Law and finding enthalpy using formation reactions. There will be a quiz on tuesday on the five step process.

Chem 112-We will do the Solvay work today as we did not have enough time yesterday. The documents that you need are attached above. We went over #2 from the stoichiometry sheet. I gave you time to work on #3 and asked you to complete #4 and 5 fromt eh worksheet on stoichiometry for tuesday. Details about the Solvay Process Assignment: Answer the questions from the handout on the Solvay Process. Please put these answers on looseleaf. Use this information to make a colourful and creative pamphlet theat informs someone about what the solvay process is all about. Things you might include might be a history or background, what it is , what it makes ie: products and byproducts, what the reaction is, and so on. Please include references. See the links for the information you might need are under yesterday's work above. Make your pamphlet colourful, interesting and creative. This is due on wednesday April 27 (bonus if passed in on tuesday).
